Evolution of Love

A variety of comedic and dramatic plays (and one brand new musical) will make up StillSpeaking Theatre’s summer offering.

The Evolution of Love explores that most powerful emotion as it is revealed through interactions between men and women, women and candy, boys cooking, bugs mating and even animated plastic reindeer.

This fascinating and varied production will feature four actors directed by four different directors in nine pieces, plus one extra piece featuring two younger actors.

 

Secrets of a Soccer Mom takes a look at a part of life that is rarely explored on stage. It speaks to everyone, no matter one’s age or gender, in attempting to answer the age old question: how in the world did I wind up HERE? Three moms born in three different decades come together at their 8 year old sons soccer game. As they watch and sometimes participate in the game, their inner lives are revealed with humor and love.

It is awards season in Hollywood when movie star Tyler Johnes (his agent suggested adding the “h”) wakes up in a strange bar where time has no meaning and nothing is as it seems. All Johnes wants is to get to the Oscars so he can accept the Best Supporting Actor award he thinks he so richly deserves, but the odd bartender named Seamus keeps throwing a wrench in the works. Unexpected appearances by his agent, his old acting partner, his well-endowed escort and his soon-to-be ex-wife further complicate Johnes' attempt to keep his date with destiny. Flavored with Albom's signature introspection, “And the Winner Is” has all the charm of “It's A Wonderful Life” for life in the fast lane.

JULY 11 – AUGUST 3, 2008
Ruth and Alex McCormick are an upstanding Mormon couple reeling from the suicide of their gay son. They’re stuck between the comfort of their faith and the unfamiliarity of their new reality when they meet their son’s partner, Marcus, for the first time. The Salt lake Tribune said, “Facing East is a tightly-wound domestic tragedy that dares to ask important questions about faith, death and survival.”
 

APRIL 11 – MAY 4, 2008
A young nun has died under mysterious circumstances in a remote parish in northern Michigan, and her superior, Father Rivard, has been charged with her murder. What led to the murder? Was anything “improper” going on in this small up-country parish? The true nature of God and love are at the heart of this searing drama.
